- Call for Nominations to Serve on AVDA Board
At the upcoming Annual Meeting at the AVDA Annual
Conference in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida on May 3, 2011, AVDA’s
Associate Members will be electing a member to the AVDA Board of
Directors, and another member as an alternate to the Board of Directors.
These two representatives will be elected to two-year terms on the
Board, and expected to attend three meetings each year. The AVDA Board
typically meets in August, January and in April/May in conjunction with
the Annual Conference.

FDA Extends Notice and
Comment Period for Unapproved Animal Drugs Rulemaking
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has extended the deadline for comments on how to increase the
number of approved veterinary drugs on the market. The FDA published a
notice in the Federal Register in December, saying it wanted to find
ways in which it could make more drugs legally available to
veterinarians and pet owners.

Text Finalized - Brochure Sponsorship Requested
AVDA is pleased to report that
representatives from the Animal Health Institute (AHI), American
Veterinary Distributors Association (AVDA) and American Veterinary
Medical Association (AVMA) have completed work on a revision to the
informational brochure on veterinary compounding that was originally
published in 2005. The Compounding Brochure working group recommended
revising the brochure because changes had occurred in the regulatory
arena regarding compounding, and there is a continued need for
clarifying federal rules and differences between FDA-approved and
unapproved drugs.

Reception During NAVC a Success
AVDA’s co-sponsored Networking Reception
with the KC Animal Health Corridor during the 2011 North American
Veterinary Conference in Orlando on January 17 was a huge success with
members and guests. The reception followed the Annual Brakke Consulting
Overview. Over 200 representatives from the animal health industry
attended a cocktail reception at Auggie’s Jammin’ Piano Bar in the
Gaylord Palms Resort. This was the fourth year for AVDA to co-sponsor
this event.

International to Merge with Lextron
Animal Health International, Inc. (NASDAQ:
AHII) and privately held Lextron, Inc. announced that they have entered
into a definitive merger agreement under which Lextron, with support
from investment funds affiliated with Leonard Green & Partners, L.P.,
will acquire all of the outstanding common shares of AHII for $4.25 per
share, or approximately $111 million, plus the repayment of AHII’s
outstanding indebtedness, for a total purchase price of approximately
$251 million. The new combined company will operate under the umbrella
of the Animal Health International, Inc. name and will be one of North
America’s leading animal health businesses.

Midwest Veterinary
Supply, Inc. Celebrates 50th Anniversary
2011 marks the 50th anniversary of Midwest
Veterinary Supply. Company founder Dr. Robert “Doc” Flickinger, DVM,
started the business in West Fargo, North Dakota. Run as a one-man
operation while still practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Flickinger was
able to establish the business on solid ground. He then invited five
friends to invest in the business in order to help position it to grow.
Today, Midwest operates out of six distribution centers located in
Burnsville, MN, Madison, WI, Des Moines, IA, Fort Wayne, IN, Norristown,
PA and Dallas, TX. The company employs well over 300 people and is the
largest family and employee owned distributor of veterinary supplies in
the nation.
Guy Flickinger, president of Midwest since
1994, says this when asked what he takes most pride in as the company’s

Health Acquires Majority Ownership of Two Leading Veterinary Software
Companies
Butler Schein Animal Health acquired
majority ownership positions in two of the leading veterinary practice
management software solution companies: McAllister Software Systems, LLC
(MSS), creator of the AVImark® practice management system; and ImproMed,
Inc. (ImproMed), creator of the Infinity practice management software
product. MSS and ImproMed will operate as subsidiaries of Butler Schein
Animal Health.

Abaxis Announces
Location for Abaxis Veterinary Reference Laboratory
Abaxis, Inc., has selected Olathe, Kansas,
for its new state-of-the-art laboratory testing facility which will be
the hub of the Abaxis Veterinary Reference Laboratory (AVRL). Abaxis
will locate in the 20,000-sq.-ft. former Osborn Labs building. The
company plans to hire approximately 100 employees over the next three
years.

Companion Animal Veterinary Visits Decline
Bayer Animal Health, Brakke Consulting and
the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI) announced
results of the Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study, a comprehensive
investigation into reasons for the decline in companion animal
veterinary visits over the past several years. The study identified six
