2008 UID Attendance Over 600

SEDA Staff Report by Kaymie Thompson Owen, CMP, Director, Meetings & Membership Services

The 2008 session of UID (University of Industrial Distribution) held this past March 2-5 in Indianapolis, IN received rave reviews from all involved. Hosted at the Indiana University / Purdue University (IUPUI) University Place Conference Center, UID expanded registration this year to accommodate over 600 attendees.

Even after expanding registration the number of waitlisted registrants was close to 300. This demand has prompted a second UID for 2008 to be offered December 2 – 5 at the IUPUI University Place Conference Center. For more information click here.

The 2008 roster of UID instructors were among the highest trained and well-known professionals from the world of industrial distribution. Reknowned presenters included Al Bates, PhD, Profit Planning Group; John Mackay, Mackay Research Group; Mike Marks, Indian River Consulting; Bruce Merrifeld, The Merrifeld Consulting Group; John Monoky, PhD, Monoky & Associates; Kathryne Newton, PhD, Purdue University; Don Rice, PhD, Texas A&M University; and Michael Workman, PhD, Michael E. Workman Associates, LTD presented workshops along with other distinguished professionals.

Al Bates led his audience in a discussion of how distributors can improve their bottom line and improve the order of economics in today’s fiscal climate. This was John Mackay’s first appearance at UID however, he is well known to AVDA members. Both of his sessions “Branchising” and “How Distributors and Manufacturers Make Money” at UID maxed out for attendance. Both of Mackay’s sessions “Branchising” and “How Distributors and Manufacturers Make Money” at UID maxed out for attendance. Mackay presents the results of the AVDA Annual Profit Survey each year at the annual conference.

UID Course Director, Kathryne Newton taught the session, “Personnel Productivity Improvement” to a sold out crowd. If you missed her at UID be sure to register for her webinar on Wednesday, May 21 on How to Find and Keep the Right Employees…Without Stealing from the Competition. For full details click here.

Don Rice, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Industrial Distribution at Texas A&M University, noted how lucky attendees were to gain admittance to the UID and attend his sold out session. “I am 70 years old folks and I am not going to be around forever to bestow these pearls of wisdom so listen up,” informed Rice. In his session, “Planning and Managing the Distributorship for Greater Profits,” Rice encouraged students to let go of their preconceptions and take a segmented approach to achieving higher profits. Rice’s programs routinely receive high marks from attendees. One participant from his 2007 UID course commented, “I wish Don Rice was my Daddy.”

UID’s stellar reputation and the commitment from companies to invest in their employees equally add to the success of the session. Representatives from three AVDA member companies sent a total of 7 registrants to the session this year. Participating companies included Midwest Veterinary Supply, Novartis Animal Health US, Inc and Pfizer Animal Health.

UID is one of several educational training seminars offered to AVDA members through our partnership with Association Education Alliance (AEA). Together we are proud to offer a variety of in person programs as well as remote webinar sessions for 2008. Click here to view the current schedule.
