FDA to Implement Final Regulations of Prescription Drug Marketing Act on December 1

The Prescription Drug Marketing Act of 1987 (PDMA) established requirements related to the wholesale distribution of prescription drugs. A primary purpose of the PDMA was to increase safeguards to prevent the introduction and retail sale of substandard, ineffective, and counterfeit drugs in the U.S. drug supply chain.

The FDA recently decided to go forward with implementation of the final regulations of the PDMA. These regulations will now take effect on December 1, 2006. These regulations affect all distributors of prescription drugs, including veterinary distributors.

AVDA is recommending that members attend a one-day educational conference on Federal and State Pedigree Initiatives: Preparing for Implementation being sponsored by the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) on October 23, 2006 in McLean, Virginia. This conference will go a long way towards informing members about the impact of the federal pedigree law and other states’ pedigree laws. The fee for non-HDMA members is $995 and AVDA members are welcome to attend. Please visit the HDMA website for additional information including hotel and conference registration information.

Feel free to contact AVDA Headquarters if you have any questions regarding this issue or if you would like additional information on the federal pedigree issue.
