AVDA 2017 Annual Conference
April 30 - May 2 • Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
Our theme for
this year’s Annual Conference “Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunities”
underscores what an exciting and dynamic time it is to be in the animal
health industry, especially as growth and consolidation continue among
distributors and suppliers in the marketplace. Transformational changes
are happening at an unprecedented rate in terms of how distributors and
suppliers sell to and communicate with their ultimate customer, the
The good news is that a recent AVDA commissioned survey of veterinarians
clearly shows that veterinary distributors are the preferred source for
purchasing products for their veterinary practices, reinforcing the
value that distribution provides in the supply chain and providing
future growth opportunities for distributors and suppliers alike.
At AVDA’s 2017 Annual Conference you will learn more about these waves
of change and oceans of opportunities through thought provoking
speakers, targeted meetings with channel partners and a variety of

"The Gathering" Reception at New Location a Great Success
Over 300 leaders in animal health attended
the 5th Annual “The Gathering” reception at its new location, Hyatt
Regency Orlando, during the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC)
on Sunday, February 5. Special thanks to our co-sponsors Animalytix and
KC Corridor for helping us host this event. The Gathering Reception has
become a great networking event for AVDA members to participate in
during NAVC and always attracts the A-list attendees from distribution
and supply in the animal health industry. Thanks to all who attended and
we look forward to seeing you all again next year!
Veterinary Practice Survey Results Prove the Power of Distribution
AVDA recently conducted a survey on the
purchasing preferences and opinions of purchasing decision makers in
Veterinary Hospitals. AVDA commissioned The Wedewer Group to conduct the
survey last fall. The results included responses from 320 decision
makers in US Veterinary Hospitals. The final data includes responses
from 293 small animal practices (85%) and 34 from large/mixed/equine
practices (15%). Of those, 279 are veterinarians (85%) and 48 are office
managers and veterinary technicians (15%) responsible for ordering.
Sixty-one percent are women and 39 percent men.
The survey results show that decision makers
clearly prefer to order from distributors rather than from
manufacturers. Seven out of 10 decision makers prefer to order from
distributors, having them handle the entire transaction including
shipping and billing. By far the biggest reason decision makers prefer
to order from distributors is that it makes their lives easier.
Sixty-two per cent of decision makers cited “ease of ordering” in their
top three reasons for choosing distributors. Other top reasons included
relationship with the salesperson and overall relationship with and
support of the distributor company.
AVDA will be sharing the full results of the
survey and its results with a presentation from Robin Wedewer of the
Wedewer Group at the AVDA Annual Conference on May 1 at the Ponte Vedra
Inn & Club in Ponte Vedra Beach FL.

Human Animal Bond Research - The Pet Effect
AVDA has been a proud supporter of Human
Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) for the past two years. Earlier
this month at the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC), HABRI
launched with HABRI co-founder Zoetis, The Pet Effect Campaign, a
multi-pronged campaign aimed to introduce pet owners to the health
benefits of the human-animal bond, and to understand how important their
veterinarians are for happy, healthy pets. Highlights of the campaign
include two video “commercials” showing the benefits to human health of
the “Dog (Bestfriendor)” and “Cat (Purrfectis)” prescriptions.
HABRI has assembled scientific evidence that
demonstrates how pets improve heart health; alleviate depression;
increase well-being; support child health and development; and
contribute to healthy aging. In addition, companion animals can assist
in the treatment of a broad range of conditions from post-traumatic
stress to Alzheimer’s disease to autism spectrum disorder. Veterinarians
are the professionals who keep pets healthy, so that in turn, they can
positively impact our health and well-being.
